Culture
Indian culture is as diverse as for any country in the world. This is due to several factors. One is that India is home to one of the oldest civilizations in the world, with archeological evidence of settlements and villages dating back more than 9,000 years. It also is due to deep religious divisions and to very distinct geographical regions that has meant societies developed apart from each other.
These variations have been embraced by the modern Indian government, which attempts to preserve this diversity. Not only does the government go to lengths to preserve the historical cultural heritage of the country, it also encourages the development of modern art, both creative and performing. Much of this comes from the colonial era of the country, when foreign rulers did little to promote the native culture.
Religion
Much of Indian culture and its cultural attractions revolve around the strong religious beliefs in the country. By far the most influential of these is Hinduism. Religion reaches into almost all aspects of Indian culture, from its social attitudes to the strict caste system
which only now is changing its previous limits of contact between citizens based on their perceived place in society.
While Hinduism is the major religion in the country, several others have sprung from its roots, most notably Buddhism. The tradition of bowing with clasped hands originated in India and symbolizes a belief in the divine nature of each individual, a belief common in most respects to all the country's denominations. The recognition of faith is seen in the country's many cultural festivals, which are mostly colorful and combine gaiety and celebration with prayer and ritual.
Art and Music
India also has great cultural diversity in its art and music. Musical traditions date back thousands of years and combine many influences, ranging from Persian and Arab to British. Modern Indian music also displays the influences of American rock and even hip hop. Although somewhat limited in international appeal Indian musicians are widely popular, and fans there carry on much the same as their counterparts in the United States.
Another cultural aspect India shares with the United States is its film industry. Increasingly, Indian filmmakers are drawing international attention and some actors and actresses are becoming popular in the mainstream. Based in Bombay, now known as Mumbai, the Indian film industry has gotten the nickname of Bollywood and is responsible for producing more movies every year than any country in the world.
